Frequently Asked Questions
-
Consider therapy if your child is experiencing ongoing changes in mood, behavior, or daily functioning that interfere with school, friendships, or family life. This may include anxiety, sadness, irritability, meltdowns, social difficulties, school avoidance, or major life transitions. If you are unsure, a consultation can help determine whether therapy would be beneficial and what type of support may be most appropriate.
-
We work with children, adolescents, adults, couples, and families. Services are tailored to developmental stage and individual needs.
-
We offer in-person sessions in Issaquah and Puyallup. We also provide telehealth services for clients anywhere in Washington State. Telehealth can be an effective and flexible option for teens, adults, and many families.
-
The first session is an assessment and consultation. We will review your concerns, gather relevant history, and clarify goals. For children, part of the session may include time with parents and time individually with the child. For teens and adults, we focus on understanding what is bringing you in and identifying meaningful goals. We will also review confidentiality, logistics, and next steps.
-
The length of therapy varies depending on goals and complexity. Some families see meaningful change in 8 to 12 sessions for focused concerns. Others benefit from longer-term support, especially for anxiety, identity development, autism spectrum needs, or family dynamics. We review progress regularly and adjust the treatment plan collaboratively.
Sessions are typically 50 minutes, with 30-minute parent coaching or check-in sessions available as clinically appropriate.
-
Yes. We provide autism spectrum therapy and neurodivergent-affirming care. Support may focus on emotional regulation, social connection, identity development, executive functioning, sensory sensitivities, and reducing burnout from masking. Our approach is strengths-based and collaborative, honoring each child’s individuality while building practical skills and confidence.
-
Yes. We provide gender-affirming and LGBTQ+ affirming therapy for children, teens, and adults. This includes support with identity exploration, social transition, family conversations, school advocacy, and emotional well-being. Our approach is respectful, developmentally appropriate, and centered on safety and self-understanding. We work collaboratively with families while honoring each client’s autonomy and identity.
-
We are a private pay practice and do not bill insurance directly. Upon request, we provide a superbill that you may submit to your insurance company for possible out-of-network reimbursement. We recommend contacting your insurance provider to ask about out-of-network mental health benefits.
-
Yes. We offer reduced-fee sessions with advanced clinical trainees who are closely supervised by Dr. Rachel Hughes. These sessions are available at a rate of $35 to $70 per session. This option provides accessible, high-quality care while maintaining strong clinical oversight.
-
This is common, particularly with adolescents. We encourage parents to approach therapy as support rather than punishment and to involve their teen in the decision when possible. Building rapport is a priority, and many hesitant clients become engaged once they feel understood and respected.
-
Yes. We maintain confidentiality within legal and ethical guidelines. For teens, we support appropriate privacy while keeping parents informed about general progress and any safety concerns. Limits of confidentiality, including risk of harm to self or others, are discussed at the start of treatment.
-
Games and creative activities are powerful therapeutic tools, especially for children and teens. They lower pressure, increase engagement, and create natural opportunities to build emotional regulation, communication skills, and social confidence. For many neurodivergent clients, gaming and structured activities also provide predictability and comfort while practicing real-life skills such as problem-solving, flexibility, teamwork, and coping with frustration.
Play and creativity are not distractions from therapy. They are often the pathway into meaningful growth.
